About this show
Dr Jo Thor (The University of Edinburgh) journeys from Annie Lobert's Hookers for Jesus ministry in modern Las Vegas to Victorian Scotland's Magdalene asylums – prayer, work, refuge. Were they pioneering social care for prostitutes, or moral control? What should we borrow today? Ensuring a detainee's dignity defends against prohibited treatment and supports a more successful return to society following detention. Professor Kasey McCall-Smith (The University of Edinburgh) explores how bad breath, faulty lights, and over-running privies unjustifiably degrade lives in detention.

- Venue notes: Accessible entry: Stand 4 is accessible from the pavement with steps leading to a courtyard. The venue is situated in the basement part of the building. There are 15 steps in total with a 90 degree turn on a stone staircase with handrails. Once inside the venue, it is level access to stand 4 with a right turn. Staff are always available to assist, however we cannot help to carry customers. Stairs: 11- 20 Number of stairs is provided as guidance and is not in addition to any wheelchair access type (lift/ramp etc) stated above.
